IX Summer School "Crossing National Borders: People, Goods, Capital, and Ideas"

Mo. 19.09.2011-Do. 22.09.2011, Leipzig

Research context for the Summer School During the past few years, the Leipzig PhD Summer School has established itself as an important venue for dialogues concerning transnationalization, transculturalism and emerging trends in the research of globalization. The Summer School is organized by the Graduate Centre Humanities and Social Sciences of the Research Academy Leipzig, which currently encompasses eight separate “classes”. This year’s Summer School is organized by the following classes: • The postgraduate program “Critical Junctures of Globalization” • International PhD program “Transnationalization and Regionalization from the 18th Century to the Pre-sent” • International PhD program “The New Europe” • PhD program “East-central Europe in a transnational perspective” • Cultural Exchange: “Classical studies, historical and ethnological perspectives” Under the auspices of the above-mentioned classes, approximately 120 PhD students in the social sciences, and in the fields of history and cultural studies, obtain structured doctoral training. The annual Summer School is an integral component of this arrangement. The Summer School occupies a special place within the educational concept of the Graduate Centre, in that it provides PhD students with a forum in which they present the results of their respective research with their peer group. These peer groups consist of students from other universities and other countries. For this reason, the invitation is open to all PhD students whose research is related to the focus of this year’s Summer School. Thematic focus of the Summer School The international Summer School calls upon PhD students from various disciplines whose dissertation research is predominately preoccupied with the cross-border circulation of people, things, ideas and capital. To this end, the Summer School will pursue three main objectives: A primary aim of the Summer School is to foster an exchange between representatives of various fields, each with its own respective range of instruments that work out empirical analyses of transnationalization (or simply, transnational processes). An outcome in this dimension can be, from a historical perspective, a periodization of what is frequently referenced as a merely new phenomenon: transnationalization, and in a systematic per-spective, the outline of an empirically saturated definition of transnationalization can emerge. A second objective is to acquaint oneself with the debates surrounding transnationalization in the various dis-ciplines, as well as to promote dialogue with objections that have been formulated against the focus upon the transnational phenomenon. Finally, the purpose of the Summer School is to seek answers as to why certain societies are situated stronger in their focus upon transnational research than others, and whether this (from a critically reflexive research perspective) reveals the continuing dissimilarities between the various disciplines and academic cultures, or whether it is a revelation of representative characteristics of the particular disciplines. This also raises the question as to whether the concept of transnationality mutatis mutandis can be assigned to older historical epochs and circumstances, which are not characterized by strong nationalization of politics, trade and society. Additionally, which characteristics can come to light with such a “stretching” of the concept of transnationalization? The following panels are in preparation: - Austausch und Ritual im Kontext des transnationalen und interkulturellen Kontakts - Diasporas als Träger transnationaler Prozesse - War Crime Tribunals and Dealing with the Past – Justice crossing the Border? - Kreative Berufe in der Film- und Fernsehindustrie. Mediale Akteure und ihre Berufs- und Arbeitswelten zwischen Kommerzialisierung und Kultur (IPP – Juliane Scholz) - Trans-national Corporations, Nation-states and Effective Development Strategies - Re-emerging diseases und die Mechanismen ihrer Kontrolle - In Market We Trust. International interactions between market, States and civil society reshaping the capitalist market system - Shifting boundaries and borders : Everyday responses - Self-Representations and External Portrayals-Imagining India through the National and the Transnational lens - East-Central Europe in Transnational Perspective Sequence of events of the Summer School The Summer School combines scholarly talks and presentations with workshops/panels, in which participating PhD students will have the opportunity to present and discuss their ongoing research. The organisation of the Summer School adheres to two perspectives: 1. Scholarly talks by internationally recognized researchers, whose work influences the field of transna-tionalization (or a significant component thereof) 2. Workshops/Panels that will serve as a forum for German and international students to present and discuss their own ongoing research. The assignment of individual sections and days will be undertaken by the organisers of the Summer School. The wishes of the participants will, of course, be taken into consideration. In addition, active participation in the discussions of the Summer School is expected. Talks and project presentations can be conducted in English or German. The discussions are generally held in German and/or English. Application All interested PhD students are cordially invited to submit a paper for application to the Summer School. The application should include: • Personal details, as well as academic status, including the relevant academic affiliation. • An abstract of 300 to 500 words, together with an explanation of its connection to the ongoing disser-tation. via Post and via E-Mail to: University of Leipzig, Graduate Centre Humanities and Social Sciences Dr. Martina Keilbach Emil-Fuchs-Str. 1 04105 Leipzig E-Mail: phd@uni-leipzig.de Registration and application deadline: 06.
