DESCRIPTION:Background\nClimate  cannot be understood without the biosphere
 . Accordingly\, different  groups around the world have started to develop
  their climate models  into Earth system models\, that on top of climate p
 hysics also include  representations of ecological processes and biogeoche
 mical cycles. This  development is supported by parallel advancements in o
 ther disciplines.  During the last decade the remote sensing community has
  developed highly  refined techniques for monitoring of ecosystem conditio
 ns and trends at  very high spatial and temporal resolution. Meanwhile\, t
 he ecological  community has started to assemble huge data sets of plant t
 raits to  develop a unified picture of the functioning of the terrestrial 
  biosphere. In addition\, different research groups have established large
   manipulation experiments to investigate biospheric changes following  gl
 obal warming and the increase in atmospheric CO2. These  developments call
  for a new level of integration between modelers\,  developers of ecologic
 al theory and data gathering communities. \nAims\nThe 2nd TERRABITES sympo
 sium is part of a sequence of bi-annual conferences. The symposium aims at
 :\n\nproviding a comprehensive overview on the current research on the ter
 restrial biosphere in an Earth System context\,\nidentifying knowledge gap
 s\, and\nshowing perspectives for future research in the field.\n\n \nTopi
 cs\nInvited are contributions focusing on the terrestrial biosphere of the
  Earth System. Among other topics\, this could be\n\n\n\n\nPlant functioni
 ng from the micro to the global scale\nLocal and large scale carbon and nu
 trient cycling\nPlant ecology at different spatial and temporal scales\nAl
 l aspects of human land cover change\nRemote sensing techniques for observ
 ation of vegetation\nTrait data bases\nTechniques of biosphere modeling\nC
 limate manipulation experiments\nVegetation-atmosphere interactionRelated 
 networks are invited to present their initiatives to a larger audience.\n
