DESCRIPTION:Research context for the Summer School\nDuring the past few yea
rs\, the Leipzig PhD Summer School has established itself as an important
venue for dialogues concerning transnationalization\, transculturalism and
emerging trends in the research of globalization. The Summer School is o
rganized by the Graduate Centre Humanities and Social Sciences of the Rese
arch Academy Leipzig\, which currently encompasses eight separate “classes
”. This year’s Summer School is organized by the following classes:\n•
The postgraduate program “Critical Junctures of Globalization”\n• Inte
rnational PhD program “Transnationalization and Regionalization from the 1
8th Century to the Pre-sent”\n• International PhD program “The New Euro
pe”\n• PhD program “East-central Europe in a transnational perspective”
\nânâ Cultural Exchange: “Classical studies\, historical and ethnological
perspectives”\n\nUnder the auspices of the above-mentioned classes\, appr
oximately 120 PhD students in the social sciences\, and in the fields of h
istory and cultural studies\, obtain structured doctoral training. The an
nual Summer School is an integral component of this arrangement. The Summ
er School occupies a special place within the educational concept of the G
raduate Centre\, in that it provides PhD students with a forum in which th
ey present the results of their respective research with their peer group.
These peer groups consist of students from other universities and other
countries. For this reason\, the invitation is open to all PhD students w
hose research is related to the focus of this year’s Summer School.
\n\nThematic focus of the Summer School\nThe international Summer School c
alls upon PhD students from various disciplines whose dissertation researc
h is predominately preoccupied with the cross-border circulation of people
\, things\, ideas and capital. To this end\, the Summer School will pursu
e three main objectives:\n\nA primary aim of the Summer School is to foste
r an exchange between representatives of various fields\, each with its ow
n respective range of instruments that work out empirical analyses of tran
snationalization (or simply\, transnational processes). An outcome in thi
 s dimension can be\, from a historical perspective\, a periodization of wh
at is frequently referenced as a merely new phenomenon: transnationalizati
on\, and in a systematic per-spective\, the outline of an empirically satu
rated definition of transnationalization can emerge.\n\nA second objective
is to acquaint oneself with the debates surrounding transnationalization
in the various dis-ciplines\, as well as to promote dialogue with objectio
ns that have been formulated against the focus upon the transnational phen
omenon. \n\nFinally\, the purpose of the Summer School is to seek answers
as to why certain societies are situated stronger in their focus upon tra
nsnational research than others\, and whether this (from a critically refl
exive research perspective) reveals the continuing dissimilarities between
the various disciplines and academic cultures\, or whether it is a revela
tion of representative characteristics of the particular disciplines. \n
\nThis also raises the question as to whether the concept of transnational
ity mutatis mutandis can be assigned to older historical epochs and circum
stances\, which are not characterized by strong nationalization of politic
s\, trade and society. Additionally\, which characteristics can come to l
ight with such a “stretching” of the concept of transnationalization? Th
e following panels are in preparation:\n- Austausch und Ritual im Konte
xt des transnationalen und interkulturellen Kontakts\n- Diasporas als T
räger transnationaler Prozesse\n- War Crime Tribunals and Dealing with
the Past – Justice crossing the Border?\n- Kreative Berufe in der Film-
und Fernsehindustrie. Mediale Akteure und ihre Berufs- und Arbeitswelten
zwischen Kommerzialisierung und Kultur (IPP – Juliane Scholz)\n- Trans-
national Corporations\, Nation-states and Effective Development Strategies
\n- Re-emerging diseases und die Mechanismen ihrer Kontrolle\n- In M
arket We Trust. International interactions between market\, States and civ
il society reshaping the capitalist market system \n- Shifting boundar
ies and borders : Everyday responses\n- Self-Representations and Extern
al Portrayals-Imagining India through the National and the Transnational l
 ens\n- East-Central Europe in Transnational Perspective\n\n\nSequence o
f events of the Summer School\nThe Summer School combines scholarly talks
and presentations with workshops/panels\, in which participating PhD stude
nts will have the opportunity to present and discuss their ongoing researc
 h. The organisation of the Summer School adheres to two perspectives:\n1.
Scholarly talks by internationally recognized researchers\, whose work
influences the field of transna-tionalization (or a significant component
thereof)\n2. Workshops/Panels that will serve as a forum for German an
d international students to present and discuss their own ongoing research
. \n\nThe assignment of individual sections and days will be undertaken
by the organisers of the Summer School. The wishes of the participants wi
ll\, of course\, be taken into consideration. In addition\, active partic
ipation in the discussions of the Summer School is expected. Talks and pr
oject presentations can be conducted in English or German. The discussion
s are generally held in German and/or English. \n\n\nApplication\nAll int
erested PhD students are cordially invited to submit a paper for applicati
on to the Summer School. The application should include:\n• Personal d
etails\, as well as academic status\, including the relevant academic affi
liation. \n• An abstract of 300 to 500 words\, together with an expla
nation of its connection to the ongoing disser-tation.\n\nvia Post and via
E-Mail to:\nUniversity of Leipzig\, Graduate Centre Humanities and Social
  Sciences\nDr. Martina Keilbach\nEmil-Fuchs-Str. 1\n04105 Leipzig\nE-Mail:
  phd@uni-leipzig.de\n\nRegistration and application deadline: 06. July 201
1\nThe final acceptance of the submitted papers will be decided by a prepa
ratory committee no later than 15 July\, 2011. A maximum of 25 papers wil
l be selected.\n\nIn order to prepare for academic commentary\, submission
of the actual paper (10-pages) is expected by 1 September. The paper wil
 l be pre-circulated and should fit within a 15-20 minute presentation.\n
\n\nParticipation fee\nThe participation fee is 50 Euro. Included in this
fee are the conference materials (including the reader)\, re-freshments d
uring the breaks as well as participation in the welcoming reception and t
he cultural events that will be held during the Summer School. \nUpon req
uest\, reasonably priced accommodations in Leipzig will be arranged by the
conference office.\nWith successful participation in the Summer School\,
it will be possible to receive a certificate from the Graduate Centre Huma
nities and Social Sciences. Further information can be found under: www.
